US election: Supreme Court rejects election challenge – politics

The majority of the Americans have elected the Democrat Joe Biden as the next US President. Still-incumbent Donald Trump, however, is trying to pull out all the stops to overturn Biden’s victory on the legal path. All news and developments at a glance:

Marcia Fudge will be US Secretary of Housing, Tom Vilsack Secretary of Agriculture

Wednesday, December 9th, 12:27 am: According to various US media, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge will become Minister for Housing and Urban Development in Joe Biden’s cabinet. The Democrat has been a member of the House of Representatives for the US state Ohio since 2008.

Fudge made a name for herself in the House of Representatives with her work on the Agriculture Committee. Among other things, her name appeared before in connection with the search for candidates for the Ministry of Agriculture. Among other things, Jim Clyburn, Democratic MP in the House of Representatives, campaigned for them.

Fudge was a fantastic candidate, he had told CNN television. Although he proposed her for the agriculture department, he was certain that she should get a seat in the cabinet regardless of Biden’s election for the agriculture ministry.

In addition, the former governor of the US state of Iowa, Tom Vilsack, will serve as Secretary of Agriculture in the Biden cabinet. Vilsack already held the post in Barack Obama’s government.

Trump camp loses Supreme Court election battle

Tuesday, December 8th, 6:30 pm: Donald Trump’s camp suffered another bitter defeat in the legal battle against the lost presidential election – this time before the US Supreme Court. The Supreme Court in Washington on Tuesday evening (local time) rejected a motion for an injunction with which Republican Trump and his supporters wanted to overturn the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the US state of Pennsylvania. In the brief decision, the court did not comment on the reasons. There were also no dissenting votes from the nine judges. This means that Trump’s side has been unsuccessful in more than 45 legal proceedings. Only in one case, in which it was a question of few votes, did the Trump side win.

Trump has been claiming since the November 3rd election that massive fraud stole his victory. So far, neither he nor his lawyers have been able to provide convincing evidence. Attorney General William Barr also said last week that he had no evidence of fraud to the extent that it would alter the outcome.

Pennsylvania had already certified the election result on November 23rd. The applicants wanted to have the certification revoked. State attorneys had warned the Supreme Court against such a “dramatic” move. They argued, “No court has ever made an order invalidating the governor’s confirmation of the results of a presidential election.”

Texas goes to Supreme Court in Trump election dispute

Tuesday, December 8th, 6:30 p.m .: In the US, Donald Trump’s camp is making another attempt to challenge the election in the Supreme Court after dozens of dismissed lawsuits. Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing four other states.

In the lawsuit published on Tuesday, he called for the election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin to be invalidated. There, the Democratic challenger Joe Biden had secured the victory in part well ahead of Trump. It is uncertain whether the Supreme Court in Washington will accept the lawsuit.

As a reason, Paxton cited that the constitution had been violated in the four states – among other things because voters were treated unequally and there were irregularities.

270 of the total of 538 electoral votes are required for victory. Biden had 305 voters behind him in the November 3 election. The vote of the electorate, who normally vote according to the result in their states, is scheduled for December 14th. However, the so-called Safe Harbor Day, which is the deadline for voting for electors in all 50 states.

Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin combined are about 62 votes – and the lawsuit is ultimately about taking Biden. Paxton wants electorates in these states either to be commissioned by local parliaments or not to be appointed in the first place. Trump has been claiming since the election that massive fraud stole his victory. Neither he nor his lawyers were able to provide any evidence. Since then, lawsuits in various states have been dismissed in more than three dozen cases.

Paxton follows on from the sometimes adventurous argumentation of the previous lawsuits: It is said that the probability of Biden’s election victory in the four states is one in a quadrillion. Even before the election, Trump had made a point of quickly filling a vacant seat in the Supreme Court with the conservative lawyer Amy Coney Barrett – and referred to a possible dispute over the outcome of the election. The Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes.

Biden names his defense minister

Tuesday, December 8th, 2:54 am: The elected US President Joe Biden wants to fill further key positions with confidants from his time as Vice President under former President Barack Obama. Biden has decided to appoint retired General Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense, according to several US media.

Austin, 67, was most recently Commander of the US Forces in the Middle East (Centcom) from 2013 until his retirement in 2016 and is therefore familiar with the current trouble spots. Centcom is responsible for the US operations in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, among others. At the beginning of his more than 40-year career in the US military, Austin was initially deployed in Germany, according to Centcom.

He would be the first African American Secretary of Defense in US history. Austin is considered controversial in some progressive groups, among other things, because he sits on the board of the weapons manufacturer Raytheon Technologies. Biden had previously announced that he would appoint his new defense minister on Friday.

Biden probably wants Xavier Becerra as health minister

Monday, December 7th, 8:05 am: President-elect Joe Biden has apparently chosen Xavier Becerra as a candidate for Minister of Health. This is reported by several US media. California attorney general Becerra is a staunch supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, introduced under President Barack Obama.

Should Becerra be confirmed as Minister of Health by the US Senate, he would take the lead in the fight against the corona pandemic, which has so far killed more than 280,000 people in the US. He would be in charge of a ministry with a good 80,000 employees and a budget of more than a trillion dollars.

The 62-year-old would be the first Latino to head the Ministry of Health. His mother was born in Jalisco, Mexico. After marrying Becerra’s father, she emigrated to the USA. In addition to fighting pandemics in general, he would be responsible for vaccines and medicines, cutting-edge medical research and health insurance for more than 130 million Americans.

Under President Donald Trump, the ministry had lost its influence in the Corona crisis. The early warnings from the ministry’s health experts contrasted with Trump’s public assurances that the virus was under control – which led to turbulence in the financial markets. Trump has repeatedly accused the ministry’s scientists of being politically motivated.

As attorney general, Becerra led a coalition of Democratic States against recent attempts by the Donald Trump administration to overthrow Obamacare. Without the law, more than 23 million people would be left without insurance, in addition to millions with previous illnesses who could be denied insurance. A ruling from the Supreme Court is expected in 2021.

Becerra sat for California in the House of Representatives until his inauguration as attorney general in 2017. During this time he had a part in making the law pass through the US Congress in 2009 and 2010. At the time, he told the media that his main motivation was tens of thousands of Americans without insurance in his constituency. Overseeing the fight against the corona pandemic would be the biggest task in Becerra’s political career to date.
