US election 2020: Pete Buttigieg’s departure comes as a surprise

Pete Buttigieg pulls back: That comes as a surprise – and above all makes you happy

The 38-year-old gay ex-mayor of South Bend had bad cards for the important primaries tomorrow’s Super Tuesday. However, his departure comes as a surprise – and above all makes you happy.

He wanted to put Donald Trump in the “rubbish bin of world history” and give young, cosmopolitan, democratic America a new face – but that’s not going to work: Pete Buttigieg, the 38-year-old former mayor of the town of South Bend, has his candidacy for the US presidency withdrawn the day before the all-important primary code on tomorrow’s “Super Tuesday”.

The gay war veteran, who has surprisingly managed to fight his way to the top of the democratic field of applicants and has won the first round of the preselection in the state of Iowa, has officially ended his candidacy in his hometown in Indiana.

Buttigieg, who speaks seven languages and was most noticeable in the past TV debates due to his deliberate, consensus-oriented answers, was by far the most promising candidate in the democratic field of applicants. He was also the first openly gay candidate ever to run for one of the most important political positions in the United States.

A blessing for Biden, a curse for Sanders

But despite his successful campaign work (Buttigieg received a total of $ 76 million in 2019 from supporters): The Harvard graduate and former employee of the consulting firm McKinsey have shown great efforts to convince voters outside of young, white circles of democrats. In the South Carolina primary last week, where 60 percent of Democratic voters are black, he won just 8 percent of the vote.

And according to American star statistician Nate Silver, Buttigieg would never have had a chance in any of the 14 states that will elect the democratic candidate tomorrow Tuesday. Colored voters are too critical of Buttigieg’s promise – and many Democrats in the southern states are probably too conservative for a gay presidential candidate.

Buttigieg’s departure will give the recently often hateful democratic candidate field a completely new dynamic. Joe Biden, 77, the winner from South Carolina, to whom many of Buttigieg’s supporters should now be able to flow, can look forward to. Just like Buttigieg, the former US Vice President under Barack Obama positions himself as the voice of the middle and as a candidate for Bernie Sanders, 78, who is radical left-wing by American standards.

Sanders, whose huge following had already given him two wins in the primaries in New Hampshire and Nevada, is likely to weaken Buttigieg’s departure. The more moderate candidates were in the race and each other slapped voters, the better it was for the self-declared “democratic socialist”. It is foreseeable that the moderate Amy Klobuchar, 59, will soon be leaving after Buttigieg’s departure. Their followers too are becoming Biden – and hardly ever to the multi-billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who is increasingly controversial because of his misogynistic statements.

Buttigieg will become a topic again at some point

From the point of view of moderate representatives, Buttigieg is clearly a hero. His departure and resignation identify him as a selfless strategist who is more concerned with the cause than with his own career. And it is precisely this reputation that will give him a huge boost within the party if he joins the White House race again in the near future. However, it currently seems rather unlikely that this will be in 2024. Latest polls suggest that both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders would win the U.S. election against incumbent Donald Trump, 73. So you won’t hear from Buttigieg until 2028.
