U.S. President Joe Biden held a phone call with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison yesterday (3rd) for the first time since taking office to discuss strengthening alliances and international issues such as China and Myanmar.
The White House said in a press release that President Biden had “spoken with Prime Minister Morrison to highlight the strength of the US-Australia Alliance, an anchor to the Indo-Pacific and global stability.”
“We discussed how the two leaders can work together to address international and regional challenges, including the China issue, combating the novel coronavirus pandemic, and responding to climate change.”
Along with this, he explained, “We have agreed to work with other alliances and partners to hold the head of the Burma coup accountable.”
The White House said, “The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together to promote common values and international security and prosperity.”
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters after the call that day, “We share President Biden’s view that the relationship between Australia and the United States provides an anchor for peace and security in the region,” Australian media reported.
In addition, Prime Minister Morrison is said to have repeatedly expressed his intention to invite President Biden to Australia in September to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Pacific Security Treaty (ANZUS).
