US Asks Russia to Stop Military Operations Near Nuclear Sites in Ukraine

Jean-Pierre said the United States was continuing to “closely monitor” the situation at the facility and radiation sensors “fortunately” showed no indication of elevated or abnormal radiation levels.

“We are also aware of reports of ill-treatment of (plant) staff and we commend the Ukrainian authorities and operators for their commitment to nuclear safety and security in difficult situations,” he said.

Jean-Pierre said the United States supports the efforts of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, to assist Ukraine with nuclear safety and security measures.

Kyiv has called for the creation of a demilitarized zone around a nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine.

“What needs to be done is to remove the occupying forces from the station and create a de-militarized zone in the area of ​​the station,” said Petro Kotin, president of Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatom.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin accused Ukrainian troops of shelling the Zaporizhzhia plant, warning of potential “disastrous consequences” for Europe.
