US Army tests “augmented reality” glasses for dog soldiers – ČT24 – Czech Television

The goal is to change the established form of operations with army dogs, in which a soldier must remain relatively close to the animal in order to give instructions with his hands or a laser pointer. Specially trained dogs are deployed in this way in search of explosives or other threats. The new glasses are intended to allow dog handlers to navigate them from places where there is no danger to them.

Dog soldiers of the future

The prototype consists of glasses, which are commonly worn by military dogs as a protective device, but are now supplemented by a camera and an augmented reality system. The dog can be projected visual guides on the visor, which he will follow after proper training and which will ideally lead him to the designated place. Thanks to the camera, the handler will see what the dog has in front of him.

“Augmented reality will be used to send commands and hints to dogs. It is not a matter of the dog interacting with her in the same way as a human, ”described one of the scientists at the head of the ARL, Stephen Lee. The prototype of guidance glasses also includes a relatively impractical harness, but Command Sight has already received additional funding for the development of a wireless version.

“The military dog community is excited about the potential of this technology,” Lee added. The company itself talks about the “extremely promising” results of the first tests, but the project is still in the “initial research phases”.
