The United States added 38,576 new COVID-19 infections this Sunday, bringing its global statistic to 2,544,169 cases of the disease, which has claimed 125,768 lives in the country, according to the independent count by Johns Hopkins University.
The balance at 20:00 local time (00:00 GMT on Monday) showed a slight daily drop in positive cases, which closed the previous day with a total of 2,505,593 patients.
During the day, 288 new deaths were recorded, compared to 502 on Saturday, according to the calculation.
On Friday, the United States broke its daily record for coronavirus infections, with 45,330 new cases, a fact that has been attributed to the outbreak of the disease in southern and western states of the country, such as Florida, Texas, California and Arizona.
New York, however, remains the worst hit state in the United States for the coronavirus with 392,539 confirmed cases and 31,397 deaths, a figure just below that of Brazil, the United Kingdom and Italy.
In New York City alone, 22,470 people have died.
New York is followed by neighboring New Jersey with 14,975 deaths, Massachusetts with 8,059 and Illinois with 6,888 deaths.
Other states with a large number of deceased are Pennsylvania with 6,606, Michigan with 6,157, California with 5,907, Connecticut with 4,316, and Florida, which totals 3,419 deaths.
California is second only to New York in contagion numbers, at 211,382.
The provisional balance of deaths -125,768- has already exceeded the lowest level of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected at best between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
President Donald Trump lowered those estimates and was confident that the final figure would rather be between 50,000 and 60,000 deaths, although in his latest calculations he already predicted up to 110,000 deaths, a number that has also been exceeded.
For its part, the Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, in whose models of prediction of the evolution of the pandemic the White House often sets, calculates that the United States will arrive in October with about 180,000 dead.
