The chairman of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen is applyla for a new head of NATO, announced the Britishestnik The Sun, citing a diplomatic source, BTA reported.

Several NATO member countries have proposed that Von der Leyen take over the leadership of the Alliance in October this year. Then the current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s term should end according to plan. His mandate was extended three times and lasted a total of close 9 years, the post says.

The Sun, citing British sources, noted that Britain is likely to veto von der Leyen’s candidacy because of her unenviable record of managing the German armed forces while she was defense minister, according to Reuters.

German newspaper Welt am Sonntag recently reported that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace are among the leading candidates to succeed Stoltenberg.
