Upper Austrian energy trading is in favor of eFuels

Upper Austria. The Energy Trade specialist group in the Chamber of Commerce sees so-called eFuels as an opportunity to continue using existing oil heating systems and combustion engines in a climate-neutral manner. However, State Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder does not see a viable path in this.

The promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energies is an essential part of the Austrian climate and energy strategy. The phasing out of fossil fuels should be implemented by 2040. For energy trading, it is not an option to proceed in a strict and undifferentiated manner with bans on heating and combustion engines. He advocates working on innovative technologies that make it possible to continue using the existing drive and engine technology in a climate-neutral and efficient manner. Such technologies are not a dream of the future, but are practically ready to go.

eFuels for the continued use of existing systems

One example of this is one of the first plants for the industrial production of synthetic fuels, which was planned in cooperation with the Styrian AVL List GmbH. “With this pilot system, an affordable, CO2-neutral, liquid and standardized fuel and fuel, 100 percent Made in Austria, becomes a reality! This enables us to make our contribution to the climate goals and at the same time ensure that proven technology can continue to be used, ”emphasizes Bernd Zierhut, chairman of the energy trading group in the WKOÖ. This “power-to-liquid” technology also makes it possible to continue using conventional oil heaters and combustion engines. There is no need for an exchange, “if the technology of the power-to-liquid systems, which generate so-called eFuels, can ensure that the existing systems continue to be used – in a climate-neutral manner,” said Jürgen Roth, chairman of the Energy Trade Association convinced in the WKÖ and chairman of the IWO Austria.

Environment State Council criticizes

Criticism comes from the Green Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder: “One thing must be clear to all of us: We have to act now. Too much time has already been wasted. ”It became clear 20 years ago that bio-diesel and bio-oil are not an option. “With e-mobility and biomass heating, we have climate-friendly alternatives available that we can use quickly and that create and secure sustainable jobs in Upper Austria,” said Environment Provincial Councilor Stefan Kaineder. The specialist group for energy trading in the Chamber of Commerce repeatedly fights nationwide poster and advertisement campaigns that counteract the climate protection measures of politicians and trigger great uncertainty among those who are faced with the decision to exchange their oil heating for climate-friendly heating, criticizes Kaineder.
