Up to 150,000 euros annual salary: Berlin MPs have an above-average number of part-time jobs – Berlin

In addition to their mandate, Berlin MPs have an above-average number of paid secondary jobs. 69 out of 160 parliamentarians earn money in addition to their parliamentary allowance. That is 43 percent – twice as much as in the Bundestag (22 percent).

Most often, members of the FDP indicate a sideline. Eight out of eleven members of the smallest parliamentary group in the House of Representatives provide information. That’s 73 percent.

At the CDU, 20 out of 31 elected representatives earn additional money (65 percent). In the AfD parliamentary group, 55 percent work on the side, i.e. twelve out of 22 MPs. In the largest parliamentary group, the SPD, 20 out of 38 MPs have a secondary job – which corresponds to 53 percent.

In the Greens, four out of 27 MPs work in addition to their mandate (15 percent). One more MP earns less in the Left Group: Here there are only three out of 27 MPs (11 percent).

Berlin MPs have only had to disclose their ancillary income since October 2020, because since 2020 they have received the same level of compensation as MPs in full-time parliaments. In a five-tier system, they must also provide information about the amount. Level 1 records gross annual income in the amount of 1 to 25,000 euros, including 30 MPs.

There are 20 MPs in category 2 (EUR 25,001 to EUR 75,000). From level 3 the MPs earn more money on the side than they get for their mandate: Six MPs have gross incomes of 75,001 to 150,000 euros. Three MPs state that they have a gross additional income of more than 150,000 euros (level 4) per year. No MP in Berlin earns more than 250,000 euros (level 5).

The constitutional lawyer Ulrich Battis criticizes the Berlin regulation: “The tiered regulation is very coarse and hardly contributes to more transparency. The ten-tier regulation of the Bundestag is not without its problems and should have been stricter, but the Berlin rule falls behind again. That is to be reprimanded from the start. ”

The information provided by the parliamentarians is purely self-reported on the home page of the House of Representatives. In contrast to the regulation at the federal level, there are no sanction mechanisms in Berlin. Battis warns: “It is absolutely clear that sanction mechanisms are needed in Berlin. They don’t even have to be particularly tough, it’s all about the symbolism – the actual control and sanction is done by the public. “
