Unveils a memorial site for the founders and restorers of the Latvian state / Article / LSM.lv

A memorial place for the founders of the Latvian state and the restorers of independence was officially opened in the Garden of Fate. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and it was planned to open the memorial site on May 4, but due to the virus pandemic and related gathering restrictions, it had to be postponed this spring.

The new memorial place in the Garden of Fate is located at the beginning of the Friends Alley. The Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece also addressed the audience at the opening ceremony, who said that now, with a larger time lag, it is even better to understand how important the decision of each individual was at that time. Former deputies of the Supreme Council also took part in the event, voting for the restoration of Latvia’s independence.

“With the creation of the new memorial place, Likteņdārzs has become the only place in Latvia where members of the Latvian People’s Council, who declared Latvia an independent, sovereign and democratic republic on November 18, 1918, and deputies of the Supreme Council, who adopted Latvia’s declaration of independence, were honored in one place. May 4, 1990. In recognition of their eternal gratitude to these people, their names are engraved on plaques at the memorial site, “said Velta Chebotarenoka, president of the” May 4 Declaration Club. “
