Unveiling the Prototype Map of Super Mario World

Decades after the game’s original release, fans have been able to get their hands on the prototype Super Mario World map.

You may remember Nintendo’s “gigaleak” that ran between 2018 and 2020. A lot of information about previously released games was revealed, including prototypes, source code, and much more.

This is where the Super Mario World prototype map comes from. When it was initially spotted in a Nintendo leak, damaged graphics prevented us from seeing what the layout actually looked like. However, hacker and researcher codfish1002 has since been able to fix the problems with Map-B, giving us a look at the map created in 1989. Twitter user MrTalida forwarded the image.

Here is an overview:

Note that the image above is just a graphical layout file. Since no level data is involved, it’s not something that can actually be played.

Although it’s pretty old at this point, a great deal of news about Super Mario World has been shared over the years. In addition to what’s been learned from ‘gigaleak’, a translation prototype was shared a few months ago – we’ve got more on that. here.

Super Mario World was originally released in 1990 in Japan and the following year in North America. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can now play it on your current Nintendo console.
