Unvaccinated pregnant women monopolize hospitalizations in San Pablo

To the increase in cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) in pregnant women, it is added that of 8 patients who were hospitalized last Tuesday at the San Pablo Maternal and Child Hospital, none received the dose against SARS-CoV-2, said the director doctor, doctor Felix Brizuela. “100% of those hospitalized are women who did not accept the vaccines.”

“We have eight pregnant patients with Covid positive.” Of the total group, two are hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit due to respiratory distress, with 20 weeks and 26 weeks, respectively. Added to this group are three puerperal women with Covid, who had to undergo a caesarean section. “They are not very serious, but they are compensating.”

Dr. Brizuela pointed out that regular patients accept the vaccine, some even go to San Pablo to access immunization, but there is a group that does not accept the biological one against the coronavirus.

In this risk group, vaccination against coronavirus is enabled regardless of age and from 12 or more weeks of gestation. The disease can develop in a serious way in pregnant women, it can even have fatal derivation, especially in women with risk factors. Until July of last year, 81 pregnant women died from Covid-19.

A daily average of 700 consultations in the outpatient and emergency departments are attended at the San Pablo Hospital. Among them pregnant women, children. Last Monday, 101 pregnant women were consulted in the emergency room for various conditions, of which 7% are due to flu cases. Of the total for each day in emergencies that add up to 300, 37% were due to respiratory diseases. “There are quite a few respiratory cases in this summer season, which is usually much more frequent in cases of diarrhea and not so much in respiratory problems.” A total of 50 patients are hospitalized for Covid.

TRACKING PANORAMA

In the Hospital of Trinidad the panorama is repeated with the increase in consultations for respiratory conditions in the middle of summer, especially in pregnant women. “There is a potential increase in cases in pregnant women with respiratory conditions who finally test their swab return to Covid as positive,” said Dr. Diego Brítez, medical director of Trinidad.

In the last two weeks, in Trinidad there were 10 cases of pregnant women who were hospitalized for Covid. “We also have a lot of outpatients who are testing positive, who are not in labor.”

Dr. Brítez urged immunization. “The numbers are clear and encouraging in relation to the functionality of the vaccine to protect against severe forms” of the coronavirus. Three pregnant women were referred to another public hospital of greater complexity, due to complications of their respiratory conditions. Among them, the San Pablo Hospital, the Itauguá National Hospital and the Limpio Hospital.

An outbreak of Covid was registered among the mothers of the shelter, who have their babies hospitalized in neonatal therapy. After this episode, the newborns were swabbed and all were negative, said the medical director.

8 pregnant women hospitalized last Tuesday at the San Pablo Hospital were not vaccinated against the virus.

7 percent of emergency visits by pregnant women correspond to respiratory diseases.

10 pregnant patients were hospitalized for Covid in the last two weeks at the Trinidad Hospital.
