New Mexico Healthcare System Strained by Billing Complexity, New Report Finds
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A new report from the university of New Mexico’s Center for Social Policy reveals deep frustration among New Mexico healthcare professionals and claims processors regarding the state’s complex and time-consuming medical billing system.The findings,based on detailed focus group interviews,highlight how these systemic issues are impacting both patient care and the well-being of clinicians.Authored by Dr. Melanie Sonntag and Dr. Gabriel Sanchez, the report is unique in its focus. While national studies have long documented the challenges of healthcare billing in the U.S., this is the first time a state has gathered such granular data directly from those navigating the system daily.
“Our findings showed that the medical billing revenue cycle…is highly complex and time intensive, which has adverse impacts on patient care and clinician well-being,” the authors write in the executive summary.
