“Unlocking Solutions for Planoise via Education, Sports, and Integration”

A Planoise, 43% of the population is under 25 years old (INSEE 2018). The large district of Besançon is therefore particularly young, but also marked by precariousness: again according to INSEE, nearly 30% of inhabitants aged 16 to 25 are unemployed or have dropped out of school.

But if the young people of the Planoise district are often singled out for acts of delinquency
, the majority of them are miles away from that. Schools and sports associations are there to provide them with a framework and, for the older ones, organizations such as the local mission and the Second Chance School provide them with future prospects.

Sports clubs alongside young people and families

From an early age, neighborhood children get involved in sports clubs, such as football or karate. The Planoise football club, created in 2019, has a hundred members, aged 10 to 18. “As long as they’re on the football field, they don’t mess around anywhere else”declares Daniel Joliduc, the vice-president.

Despite good discipline and very good results, the image of the district sticks to the skin of the club. “All of our opponents think about problems when they play against us. But the numbers say otherwise. Since the club was founded, we’ve only taken two red cards. Yellow cards have always been handed out for games, but never for behavior problems“, assures Kevin Joliduc, sporting director of the club.

All the coaches and supervisors of the club give of their person to help the children of the district. Romain Joliduc trains the U13s, but its functions go beyond those of football : “When they need help with homework, we are there. If the parents have financial difficulties, we find small jobs, like cleaning cars, so that the children can finance their license or certain trips”.

Still in the neighborhood the PKA karate club is very famous. Several dozen children come to train on Wednesdays and Fridays, under the orders of the legendary karateka, Aly Yugo. This coach, bronze medalist at the African championships in the colors of Burkina Faso in 1997, knows how to combine kindness, support and discipline.

During his training, Aly Yugo does a lot of pedagogy on the mats, explaining the sport, while drawing parallels with daily life and school. “I think for my son it’s good to be at this club to channel his energy and gain discipline for school.“says Mustapha.

“Children with difficult paths”

Alongside sport, children’s education is played out at school and especially in college, a pivotal period in full adolescence. In the Diderot college in the heart of Planoise, more than 600 students are supported by the teaching staff. “Here, we listen to the students and we adapt to them. Most of them are children with difficult backgrounds. They therefore matured very early and we have to deal with that”, says lucid Nadia Zagmout, English teacher. It is precisely the singularity of all these students that is the strength of the establishment where all the different origins and cultures live together very well.

To better support students, the Diderot college is classified as an REP+ establishment. THE classes are a little less overloaded than in other establishments and several frameworks are put in place to avoid disruption. For example, do not systematically exclude a student in the event of a problem, but rather give him some sort of “community service”. The goal is to empower students and prevent them from ending up hanging around the neighborhood.

For young adults or those who have dropped out of school, alternatives exist in the neighborhood to help them find their way. The Mission locale
accompanies young people to help them find a jobprofessional training or even getting a driving license, thanks to aid.

At the Second Chance School, “I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time”

Lsecond chance school
established since October in Planoise recovers young people who have dropped out of school or are unemployed. Upgrades in general culture, French and maths are put in place. Unlike a traditional school, the courses are very concrete.

“I’m learning to manage my budget, administration, first aid, lots of things in everyday life that we don’t learn at school. Here, I don’t have the feel like wasting my time”recognizes Fiona, a 17-year-old.

After six months of training, approximately 64% of trainees at this school leave with professional training or an employment contract, thanks to internships. An interesting result when we know that 16% of the inhabitants of the district are unemployed. Most of these job seekers have a level equal to the CAP-BEP.

France Bleu Besançon devotes five reports to the life of the Planoise district in Besançon. Find the articles in this series as they are published:
