According to a new study from the University of Pittsburgh, iPhone would be able to detect if a person is in a state of alcoholic impregnation, and more specifically if it exceeds the authorized limits to inform him not to drive. This function would be performed not using a breathalyzer but via the analysis of the displacement.
A first test phase has been carried out on a sample of 22 people (15 men and 7 women), each having drunk alcohol up to 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood – which is the legal limit in the United States and the United Kingdom. Then everyone, with an iPhone in their pocket, did several round trips following a line drawn on the ground. In 90% of cases, the iPhone was able to detect that the line was not correctly followed and that the person moved away, a sign, according to the researchers, of a state of intoxication too important to take the wheel.
For researchers, « there is no limit to the ingenuity of the possible uses of this data, but it is important to remember how this science can be adapted in the future. Could it connect to the car’s system so that someone who has drunk too much is not allowed to drive?
