University of Puerto Rico will finish its academic semester at a distance

Due to the extension of the curfew on the island and taking into account the opinion of the health experts regarding the appropriate measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19, the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) announced that it will culminate this academic semester remotely, using alternative platforms and methods supported by technologies, as reported by the institution’s president, Dr. Jorge Haddock.

Currently, the UPR has 95% of its academic offer adapted to online technologies, which represents more than 11,500 courses accessible through distance learning tools.

“After a weighted analysis with the rectors of the university system, we have made the decision to end this academic year at a distance to protect our students and employees. Experts in epidemiology and health report that the most complicated point of this crisis will be between April 15 and May 8, and the security measures provided by the Government of Puerto Rico could be extended. Furthermore, it is not recommended to resume regular operations in the institution suddenly. In these circumstances I do not consider it appropriate to bring students and staff together in classrooms, campuses, and units. This could provoke COVID -19 infections and would put the health of our university community and the people in general at risk, ”said Haddock.

The university leader specified that the precincts and units are working on the process to receive and distribute the financial aid assigned under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) and evaluating any adjustments required for tuition and fees payments. already done.

The UPR will receive $ 81.1 million, as part of the economic stimulus included in said federal legislation. At least fifty percent will be destined to provide emergency assistance to students so that they can cover the cost of materials and technology to continue their distance classes, food, housing, medical expenses, childcare, among others related to the emergency. . “In this difficult and challenging time, the distribution of these funds represents a relief for many of our students, so we will act responsibly so that they can receive assistance promptly,” said the president.

The official explained that they will also be identifying aid for teachers in the university system. “Many of our teachers have had to incur additional resources and efforts to adapt their courses to online technologies, with our students as the north. We appreciate and recognize their commitment and performance during this process,” he stated.
