University of Groningen scientist on nitrogen problem: ‘We mainly produce for Germany’

The financial interests of the agricultural industry are considerable. Last year, the Netherlands exported more than a hundred billion euros worth of agricultural products. That is an increase of more than nine percent compared to 2020 (source: central government).
‘The problem is that most of this money does not end up with the farmers, but with the other links in the production chain,’ says environmental and agricultural scientist Sanderine Onhebel. She also points out the role of the consumer: ‘They pay much less for a carton of milk in the supermarket than they should.’-
