Universities – Frankfurt am Main – Universities want to pool forces for cutting-edge research – Education

Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – The three universities in Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Mainz want to pool their strengths for cutting-edge research and further deepen their cooperation. The so-called Alliance of Rhine-Main Universities announced on Monday that a joint application is being prepared for the next round in the excellence strategy competition of the federal and state governments.

Through this funding program for top-level research, funding in the hundreds of millions flows into research and science every year. Joint applications for so-called clusters of excellence, i.e. research networks of an outstanding kind, are now to be submitted. The next round in the competition is scheduled to start at the end of 2022.

In addition, none of the universities in the Rhine-Main area have so far counted among the universities of excellence. As an association, this should now succeed – the next tender for this is expected to start in 2025.

In total, more than 100,000 young people study at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, the Gutenberg University in Mainz and the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2015, the three universities merged to form the Alliance of Rhine-Main Universities. They currently offer seven joint courses, including in political theory and medical technology. More are to follow.
