United Nations: Western and Iranian Weapons Supply Triggered War Crimes in Yemen for 6 Years Page all

GENEVA, KOMPAS.com – Investigator PBB revealed on Wednesday (9/9/2020), that the weapons supplied by Western powers and Iran to the disputing party at Yaman trigger war crimes for 6 years.

Launch Reuters on Wednesday (9/9/2020), high conflict was marked by air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi, which is deadly.

UN investigators later said in a report that last year’s coalition airstrikes may amount to war crimes.

While the Houthi movement in favor of Iran commits killings and other violations that may also be war crimes.

This is the third consecutive year that an independent panel of experts has found that all parties have violated international law.

This year’s findings include incidents from June 2019 to June 2020.

“After years of documenting the dire toll from this war, nobody can say ‘we don’t know what happened in Yemen’,” said Kamel Jendoubi, chairman of the Expert Group.

Panel member Melissa Parke told reporters that all parties to the conflict were responsible for the violations.

“Namely the Yemeni government, the de facto authority (Houthis), the Southern Transitional Council, and members of the coalition, in particular Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, “said Parke.

Britain, Canada, France, Iran and the United States continued their support to the warring parties “including through arms transfers, thereby helping to perpetuate the conflict”, the UN panel said.

“This year we added Canada because there was an increase in Canadian arms sales in 2019,” said panel member Ardi Imseis, adding that Spain and Italy had also sold weapons.

“Therefore, we repeat our call to countries to stop supplying weapons to the parties to the conflict,” he said.

Attack out of proportion

The three experts, Jendoubi, Parke and Imseis, urged the UN Security Council to prepare the situation in Yemen and bring it to the International Criminal Court.

The move also allowed for prosecution and extended the list of people under sanctions.

The Saudi-led Sunni Muslim coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015, after the Houthis ousted the internationally recognized government from power in the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

The conflict is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and its regional enemy, Shia Muslim Iran that left more than 100,000 people dead.

“During this reporting period, the Group verified 4 further air strikes or a series of air strikes involving similar failures, to take all necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian objects,” the report said of the coalition supporting the government of the exiled Yemeni president, Abd-Rabbu. Mansour Hadi.

“Attacks that are disproportionate are war crimes under customary international law,” he said.

Mortar bombs fired by the Houthis hit the central prison in the frontline city of Taiz in April, killing 6 women and 2 girls, according to the report, who said it could amount to a war crime.
