Unisba Chancellor Reported Police Shoot Tear Gas at Campus

Bandung, CNN Indonesia

Chancellor of the Islamic University of Bandung (Unisba) Edi Setiadi reported the alleged case of the police firing gas air mata into the campus. The tear gas shooting took place on Wednesday (7/10), after a demonstration against him Omnibus Law UU Cipta Kerja in front of the West Java DPRD.

In the Unisba complaint letter received CNNIndonesia.com, Edi said that the campus was on holiday because the learning was conducted online. However, because of their concern with the condition of the nation, students were encouraged to take action against the Omnibus Law.

Then, on Wednesday (7/10), a group of students from various universities who had already taken action in front of the West Java DPRD moved to Unisba.

“They forced their way into Unisba because they avoided being shot by tear gas from the police. The entry of students into the campus area is beyond our control because the campus is actually an educational facility that does not need to apply very strict personnel or facilities,” said Edi in the letter.

However, after the students entered Unisba, continued Edi, there were police who fired tear gas into the campus. There was even an explosion that led to the Unisba campus which broke the glass of the Unisba guard post.

“With this incident we ask the leadership of the National Police to control their members so they do not overreact to the campus area because it is a lecture facility that aims to educate the nation,” said Edi.

Unisba also hopes that this incident will not happen again.

“Because we know the duties and functions of the police, especially the duty to protect and protect the community,” he said.

As is known, a wave of actions against the Omnibus Law on the Job Creation Law occurred in a number of regions. Generally, demonstrations are organized by students and workers’ elements.

They are disappointed with the attitude of the DPR and the government that ratified the Omnibus Law Cipta Kerja into law. Labor is convinced that such regulations tend to benefit employers rather than workers’ rights.

Rallies were held in Bandung, Lampung, Palembang, Surabaya, Bekasi and several other areas. Demonstrations in Bandung itself took place in front of the West Java DPRD from Tuesday to Thursday (6-8 October 2020).
