Today, a 24-hour strike is taking place at the Flemish public transport company De Lijn. The common union front (ACOD, ACV and ACLVB) protests against plans to privatize the dial-a-bus exchange and student transport, which would lead to less job security. The impact for tram and bus traffic in Flanders is not yet entirely clear, but it is expected that the strike will be felt especially in the cities.

It is not yet possible to give a general picture of the nuisance on the De Lijn transport network. “But the dissatisfaction among the staff is widely supported”, says union secretary Jo Van der Herten (ACV). “So I certainly expect nuisance in the cities. In rural areas, where there are more lines that are leased, it will probably be less felt.”

The public transport company makes a similar assessment. “If the strike is followed up properly, the nuisance will be greatest on the city networks”, says Astrid Hulhoven, spokeswoman for De Lijn.
