Unbelief at Main Stage in Den Bosch: ‘This means that we have to close’

At the Main Stage at the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, only thirty guests are allowed to attend performances for the time being. That is the conclusion after the announcement of the security region that no exemptions are granted to theaters, cinemas or other cultural institutions. A thousand people were allowed to attend a performance in Main Stage. “To be honest, I’m dumbfounded.”

Director Jeroen Dona of Brabanthallen does not have a good word for the decision of the security region. “This is really the last thing we expected. I had the feeling that we were talking very constructively with the safety region the whole time. And then this.”

What it means for his Main Stage is clear: “It is very simple. This means that we have to close. But to let thirty people in here, that is completely ridiculous. This theater was made for much larger numbers. It allowed a thousand people since 1 July. go inside.”

The fact that a few kilometers further in the region of Central and West Brabant there are theaters that can get an exemption, is quite stinging. “Look, safety comes first, I have said that from day one. But this is completely arbitrary. This cannot be explained, is it? We have to be closed and people can go to the theater within a relatively short travel distance.”

Dona is therefore not planning to just close the tent. “We are not going to accept this. We will be on the barricades in the coming days. To show Mayor Mikkers that this is neither realistic nor fair. I also immediately requested a meeting with him. How is it possible that Carré? in Amsterdam it is allowed to open and can receive public, and not us?

And so there is still a glimmer of hope in Dona. “Look, this week’s performances have been lost. We will just arrange that nicely with the visitors. But we are lucky that the next big performance is not planned until next Wednesday.” Before then, he hopes to get an exemption.
