NEW YORK – UN Women is set to host two high-level side events during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) in September 2025, focusing on women’s economic empowerment and leadership in peacebuilding. The events, announced today, underscore the organization’s commitment to advancing gender equality and sustainable development on a global stage.On September 25, 2025, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. EDT, the Government of Sweden and UN Women will co-host “How empowering her transforms the world” at the Swedish Residence. The event will spotlight transformative approaches to women’s economic empowerment, featuring remarks from Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, UN Women Executive director Sima Bahous, and a keynote address by UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Danai Gurira.organizers say the event will explore how investing in women – across sectors like arts, sport, peacebuilding, and campaigning – can unlock broader prosperity. The event will be both in-person and livestreamed.The following day, September 26, 2025, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.EDT, UN Women will convene “Women’s Leadership for Peace” at UN Headquarters. Hosted by the UN Women Leaders Network – a global group of high-level women leaders advocating for gender-equal participation in leadership – the event will spotlight women’s roles in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and crisis response. UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous, who chairs the Network, will deliver opening remarks, and a panel discussion will feature distinguished members sharing their perspectives and experience. The event is being held in cooperation with the United Nations Foundation.
