UN Security Council rejects Russia’s resolution and urges not to kill children in Ukraine – UNIAN

Of the 15 members of the UN Security Council, only two supported the document proposed by Moscow. This, of course, is Russia itself, as well as China. All others abstained.

Russian resolution on war in Ukraine, which does not mention the role of Moscow, failed in the vote of the UN Security Council. The draft document was supported only by Russia and China, the remaining 13 members abstained.

This is reported Reuters.

“If Russia had cared about the humanitarian situation, it would have stopped bombing children and put an end to their siege tactics. But they didn’t,” British Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward said after the vote.

A Security Council resolution requires at least nine votes and no veto from Russia, China, Britain, France or the US.

Of the 15 members of the UN Security Council, only two supported the document proposed by Moscow. This, of course, is Russia itself, as well as China. France, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates abstained during the voting.

Russia’s representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, accused the abstentions of politicizing their motives.

The text of the resolution contains calls for “a ceasefire for the evacuation of civilians.” But all this is just an illusion that Moscow is trying to create. After all, in fact, the document prepared by the Russians is saturated with their traditional cynicism. Russia “proposes to ban the parties to the conflict from using civilian infrastructure to deploy military installations and not to install them in densely populated areas.”

Ukraine has never done this. But Russia ruthlessly bombs Ukrainian cities and strikes at residential areas, and at the same time is covered by civilians. It is doubtful that the aggressor state suddenly agreed to publicly acknowledge its crimes. So, by submitting such a resolution, there were by no means good intentions pursued.

The Russian resolution was criticized by US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield. She stressed that with this document, Moscow once again tried to use the Security Council to “cover up its cruel actions.”

Russia had the audacity to put forward a resolution asking the international community to resolve the human crisis that Russia itself has created,” she stressed.

And she stressed that the UN Security Council will not participate in Russia’s insidious game. Indeed, in the relevant document there is no mention of its role as the only cause of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

“Only Russia is to blame for the war in Ukraine,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield. “Russia’s insincere attempts to deny the truth about its actions continue to fail.”

Recall that Ukraine recently asked the UN General Assembly to vote for a resolution on the humanitarian consequences of the war, which was prepared by an interregional group of more than 20 states. They did not even try to submit this document to the Security Council for consideration, because Russia, as its permanent member, has the right to veto. But the General Assembly makes its decisions by a simple majority.
