The US urged the General Assembly to reject the resolution requiring Israel to end its “illegal presence” in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months, arguing it undermines the two-state solution, but they did not have veto power.
In a historic decision taken by an overwhelming majority, at a time when the tension in the Middle East is rising sharply after the attacks with the jammed buzzers and radios, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution, demands that Israel “end within 12 months the his illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories”.
The text passed with 124 votes in favour, 43 abstentions and 14 votes against (including the US, Israel, Argentina, the Czech Republic and Hungary).

The resolution, after first welcoming the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) which characterizes the occupation and settlements as illegal and calls on the Israeli government to withdraw its forces, then goes a step further and calls on states: “to take measures to stop the importation of all products originating from Israeli settlements, as well as the supply or transfer of arms, ammunition and related equipment to Israel … when there are reasonable suspicions that they may be used in the occupied Palestinian territories.”
The resolution passed because in the UN General Assembly there are no countries with the right of veto and it records in an absolutely clear way how isolated Israel is internationally. The resolution is the first to be formally submitted by the Palestinian Authority itself, which just days ago gained additional rights and privileges within the organization, including a seat in the general assembly chamber and the right to submit draft resolutions.
The Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, said in his statement before the vote that: “Every country has a vote and the world is watching us. Please stand on the right side of history. With international law. With freedom. With peace.”
For her part, the US ambassador (who are Israel’s main suppliers of weapons systems) to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, urged countries to vote against the text. In fact, he called on the countries to vote against this “inflammatory wording” of the text which does not mention that “Hamas, a terrorist organization, exercises power in Gaza” and emphasized that “the discriminatory resolution” does not promote the two-state solution.
Although General Assembly resolutions are not binding, Israel was quick to denounce this text. “It’s a shameful decision that supports the Palestinian Authority’s diplomatic terrorism,” Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon said shortly after the vote. “Those who contribute to this circus are not just spectators” but “collaborators. Every vote in favor of this circus fuels violence and emboldens those who reject peace,” Danon said on Tuesday.
