The incident occurred on a ship that flew the flag of the Marshall Islands

The suspect hijacked a ship in the Indian Ocean last summer, after which he demanded and received a ransom.

In Ukraine, a man was detained, who is suspected of hijacking a ship in the Indian Ocean last year. This is the first time that a citizen of Ukraine is declared suspicious of such a crime. This was announced on Tuesday, July 20, by the press center of the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, a citizen of Ukraine, being an employee of a foreign security company, provided security services in pirate-hazardous shipping areas.

“In fulfilling his security obligations in July 2020, he arrived with arms on one of the ships flying the flag of the Marshall Islands in the western Indian Ocean. Acting for his own benefit, using weapons, informed the captain that he was hijacking the ship and required a change in its course to the port of Fujairah, as well as the payment of funds, “- said in the message.

The captain of the ship gave the order to the chief mechanic to switch the car into maneuvering mode, and passed the requirements of the citizen of Ukraine to the managers of the shipowner’s company.

As a result of negotiations, four days later, representatives of the shipping company issued an order to the captain to give the invader money in exchange for surrendering their weapons and unblocking the work of the court.

“This is the first time such a crime against peace, human security and international law and order has been disclosed in Ukraine,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Law enforcers conducted a search at the suspect’s place of residence. Now the question of choosing a preventive measure for the suspect is being decided.

Earlier it became known that the pirates took the crew members prisoner tanker Davide B in the Gulf of Guinea. It was alleged that there were citizens of Ukraine, Romania and the Philippines on board. 15 people were taken prisoner.

Recall, January 30 freed six Ukrainian sailors from captivity, crew members of the ship Stevia. They were held in pirate captivity for a month and a half in Nigeria.
