As reported ReutersFriday (20/5/2022), since turning away from the capital Kiev, Russia deployed artillery and armored vehicles to try to seize more territory in Donbas, which is home to Donetsk and Luhansk controlled by pro-Moscow separatists.
“The invaders are trying to apply more pressure. It’s like hell there — and it’s not an exaggeration,” Zelensky said in a statement late Thursday (19/5).
“(There are) continuous attacks in the Odessa region, in the cities of central Ukraine. Donbas is completely destroyed,” he added.
Russia has called its invasion a ‘special military operation’ to get rid of Ukrainian fascists. But Ukraine and its Western allies have called it a baseless pretext for an unwarranted war.
Last week, Russia secured its biggest victory since the invasion of Russia began, with Kiev announcing it had ordered the garrison at the steelworks in Mariupol to withdraw after a protracted siege.
