Ukrainian drone attack sets Russian oil depot on fire as Zelenskyy announces prisoner exchange

Ukraine Drones Hit Russian Oil Depot; Russia Strikes Mykolaiv

Nationwide Barrage Sees 93 Drones Downed Over Russia, Civilian Casualties Mount

A massive fire erupted at a Russian oil depot near the Black Sea resort of Sochi following an overnight Ukrainian drone attack, Russian officials reported Sunday. The incident occurred amidst a broader exchange of strikes and as Ukraine’s president announced a significant prisoner swap.

Over 120 firefighters battled the inferno, which was ignited when debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank. Governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, shared the update on Telegram. Social media footage appeared to show towering plumes of smoke originating from the depot. Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted flights at Sochi’s airport due to the incident.

Voronezh Region Reports Casualties

Further north, the Voronezh region authorities confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries from a separate Ukrainian drone incursion. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense systems intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and the Black Sea during the overnight period leading into Sunday.

Russian Missile Barrage Targets Mykolaiv

In southern Ukraine, a Russian missile strike impacted a residential district in the city of Mykolaiv, according to the State Emergency Services. Seven people were reported injured in this attack. The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that Russia launched a total of 76 drones and seven missiles against Ukraine. While 60 drones and one missile were successfully intercepted, 16 drones and six missiles reportedly hit targets across eight locations.

These retaliatory strikes conclude one of the most lethal weeks in Ukraine recently, following a devastating Russian drone and missile assault on Thursday that claimed the lives of 31 people, including five children, and injured over 150 others. The escalating attacks come as international pressure mounts, with U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a shortened deadline of August 8th for progress on peace efforts.

President Trump stated on Thursday that special envoy Steve Witkoff is en route to Russia to encourage Moscow to accept a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict. He has also warned of additional economic sanctions if meaningful progress is not achieved.

Prisoner Exchange Agreement Reached

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Sunday that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement to exchange 1,200 prisoners. This agreement follows the latest round of negotiations held in Istanbul in July.

“There is an agreement to exchange 1,200 people,”

Zelenskyy further elaborated on X, stating that the lists of individuals for the swap are currently being finalized and that efforts are underway to facilitate the “return of our civilians.” Russia has not yet issued an immediate comment on the announcement.

Additionally, President Zelenskyy conferred with senior Ukrainian officials regarding the “negotiation track,” specifically focusing on the implementation of agreements from the Istanbul meetings and preparations for future discussions. While previous rounds of talks have resulted in prisoner exchanges, they have not yielded any breakthroughs toward a ceasefire.

The current conflict has seen significant drone activity. In 2023 alone, the total number of drones deployed in conflicts globally was estimated to be over 1,000, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI Yearbook 2024).

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking alongside U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, indicated he was moving up a deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine, citing a lack of progress.
