UK records 282 new deaths and 36,675 in total

The UK today recorded 282 new deaths due to covid-19, which brings the total number of deaths associated with the pandemic to 36,675, said British Transport Minister Grant Shapps.

At the daily press conference, held from Downing Street, the minister indicated that the country registered 2,959 new cases of covid-19 contagion in the last 24 hours. In total, the UK has more than 257,000 cases.

The figures released on Friday had pointed to the existence of 351 more deaths than the previous day and 3,287 new cases of contagion.

The general downward trend in these numbers has led the government to stick to the plan to continue to ease the containment regime, with a new phase scheduled for early June to partially open primary schools and non-essential stores.

The government also intends to introduce a 14-day quarantine system to people arriving from abroad to try to stop the transmission of the covid-19, with the application of fines to those who do not comply.

In the statements he made to the press today, the Minister of Transport announced a package of 283 million pounds (307 million euros) for the transport network to resume working full time.

However, Shapps urged those who can work at home to continue in this regime and warned that the transport service can only operate, at best, with one fifth of its normal capacity, so that social distance is maintained and avoidance of spread of the virus.

The minister also asked that the use of public transport should be avoided whenever possible and opting for alternative means such as bicycles, own vehicles or walking.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 338,000 deaths and infected more than 5.2 million people in 196 countries and territories.
