A controversial UK law that violates certain Brexit agreements with the European Union has a first majority in the UK parliament. Despite warnings from Brussels, the House of Commons agreed with 340 to 256 votes on Tuesday, British media report. Now Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposal has to go to the House of Lords.
Parliament already approved the preliminary bill on 15 September. This was followed by several days in which the proposal was debated. The prime minister has made some commitments to critical Conservative party members to win them over. Some of the critical members believe that the London government should not violate international law.
In the compromise proposal states, among other things, that parliament must first be requested before certain parts of the so-called Northern Ireland protocol are rejected. The only thing that must be established is that the EU is not abiding by the agreements and thus “undermines” the protocol itself.
Johnson’s bill was discredited because it overrules important provisions in the current agreement on Britain’s departure from the EU. In the clause, London gives itself the power to change agreements on the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
However, those agreements were made with the EU to avoid a hard border with Northern Ireland. Brussels speaks shame about it, but the British Prime Minister believes his law is necessary to prevent a split of the United Kingdom from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Johnson doesn’t want Northern Ireland to deviate from the rest of the UK.
