UGM expert explains hyposmia, a new symptom of Covid-19

TIME.CO, Jakarta – Case COVID-19 again reported to have increased in UK with new symptoms including hyposmia. Lecturer and ENT specialist at the Academic Hospital (RSA) UGM Anton Sony Wibowo explained that hyposmia is one of the symptoms of a reduced ability to smell something.

Patients suffering from hyposmia often complain that objects or sources of odors that are supposed to have a strong odor have only a faint odor or do not have a clear odor, but the odor is still the same. “For example, the fishy smell is still fishy or sweet, it’s still sweet, it’s just that the intensity of the smell has decreased,” he explained on Thursday, December 22, 2022.

He said there have been many cases of patients with hyposmia during the Covid-19 pandemic. Overseas it is reported that there are about 60% of outpatients who report complaining of a decrease in the ability to smell. “My research is that at UGM RSA in 2022 there will be approximately 50% of patients in outpatient polyclinics suffering from hyposmia,” she added.

Hyposmia, said Anton, is a symptom that does not appear only due to the Covid-19 infection. However, these symptoms can occur due to nose and sinus infections, nasal turbinate hypertrophy or other viral infections, and even due to head injuries.

Anton said the treatment for hyposmia was in the form of treatment for the virus itself. Also, along with other supportive therapies such as some multivitamins. “And the most important thing is to treat the underlying disease because hyposmia is just a symptom,” he said.

Even as Covid-19 in Indonesia is said to be declining with the number of daily cases continuing to decline, Anton appealed to the public to maintain health protocols. Not only that, he also asked the public to immediately vaccinate anyone who hasn’t taken it. Then, for those who have been vaccinated, have a booster vaccine to increase antibodies so as to suppress the risk of transmission of Covid-19.
