Petr Yan Reclaims Bantamweight Crown at UFC 323
LAS VEGAS – Petr Yan delivered a stunning upset at UFC 323 on Saturday night, defeating previously undefeated Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision to recapture the bantamweight title. The victory marks a significant turning point for Yan, who had been working his way back to championship contention following a loss to Aljamain Sterling.
The bout, held at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, showcased Yan’s calculated striking and grappling defense against Dvalishvili’s relentless pressure and high-volume attack. Judges scored the fight 48-47,48-47,and 49-46 in favor of Yan. This win re-establishes Yan as a dominant force in the 135-pound division and throws the future of the bantamweight landscape into question.
Yan’s path back to the title was paved with consecutive victories over Sean O’Malley and Song Yadong, demonstrating his resilience and adaptability. Dvalishvili, riding an eight-fight win streak, entered the contest as the division’s number one contender and many expected him to implement a pace that would overwhelm Yan. However, Yan effectively neutralized Dvalishvili’s grappling attempts and landed crucial strikes throughout the five rounds.
“I prepared for this fight very seriously,” Yan stated thru an interpreter after the fight. “I knew Merab was a very tough opponent, and I had to be at my best.”
The result sets the stage for potential rematches with former champions or a new wave of challengers eager to test Yan’s reign. The bantamweight division, already brimming with talent, now has a clear champion in a fighter steadfast to solidify his legacy.
