Ubisoft will shut down online services for 15 games in September – Update – Gaming – News

Ubisoft will make the online services of 15 games inaccessible on September 1. These are largely older titles, including Far Cry 3. That happens on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U platforms. Seven PC titles also lose all their DLC, even if it has already been purchased.

From seven PC games says Ubisoft that ‘the installation and access to dlc will not be available’. These include Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed 3 (2012) and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. A complete overview can be found at the bottom of this article. An eighth PC game, Space Junkies, is said to be online-only will lose its online services and will therefore no longer be playable at all. The other games all have single player modes.

It is also striking that a plurality of these games are currently offered with a discount. Far Cry 3 is now on Steam for example with a 70 percent discount. The description of the game advertises the presence of an “innovative multiplayer mode” and additional DLC, without mentioning that these will disappear in less than two months with this game. The same applies to Space Junkiesa game that has only been on the market for just two years.

In addition to PC games whose DLC is lost, a total of 15 games lose their online functions. This often happens, but not only, on older generations of consoles. These include Anno 2070, Assassin’s Creed II, Rayman Legends and more.

Ubisoft justifies the decision by saying it “will allow it to focus its resources on delivering great experiences for players playing newer or more popular titles.” It is the second time in a short time that Ubisoft is going through its games with the broom. The company also uses a total overview of closed online services in games.

According to a report by Bloomberg As of last April, the French game publisher’s board is exploring the possibility of letting themselves be taken over. It would be in talks with investment companies, but those talks would not be very advanced yet. Taking out services for older games can be a way to make the company financially healthier and therefore more attractive for an acquisition in a short time.

PC games where “installation and access to DLC will be unavailable” and lost online features:

  • Assassin’s Creed 3 (2012)
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD
  • Driver San Francisco
  • Far Cry 3 (2012)
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
  • Silent Hunter 5

Online-only PC game loses its online features and is therefore effectively unavailable:

Games that don’t lose their dlc, but whose online functionalities do disappear:

  • Year 2070 (PC)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (PC, PS3)
  • Assassin’s Creed 3 2012 (PS3, X360, Wii U)
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (PS3, X360)
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations (PS3, X360)
  • Driver San Francisco (PS3, X360)
  • Far Cry 3 (PS3, X360)
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier (PS3, X360)
  • Rayman Legends (PS3, Wii U, X360)
  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist (PS3, X360)
  • ZombiU (Wii U)

Update, 12.17 pm: in a previous version this article stated that seven Ubisoft PC games would become completely unavailable. After feedback from tweaker 0M3G4 and a re-reading of Ubisoft’s webpage, it can be concluded that the company most likely means that the dlc of those seven games will soon disappear, but that the games themselves will remain available.
