Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed‘ Franchise Loses Key Director Marc-Alexis Côté
Paris – Ubisoft is searching for a new leader for its blockbuster Assassin’s Creed franchise after marc-Alexis Côté, the executive who oversaw the series as 2022, departed the company. The move comes as Ubisoft prepares to aggressively monetize its most valuable intellectual property through its newly formed Vantage Studios.
Côté’s exit, announced internally by Ubisoft executive Christophe Derennes, is attributed to “personal expectations and priorities” regarding Vantage studios, a subsidiary launched October 1st in partnership with Tencent. The studio is tasked with maximizing revenue from Ubisoft’s top licenses, aiming for 1 billion euros annually, with Assassin’s Creed at the forefront. The franchise itself has sold over 200 million copies across nearly two decades, spawning adaptations in comics, novels, and a forthcoming Netflix series.
Côté, a Quebec native, previously directed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, a critically and commercially accomplished installment in the series. His departure leaves a void as Ubisoft navigates an aspiring roadmap for the franchise.
In the interim, teams working on Assassin’s Creed will report to Charlie Guillemot, co-CEO of Vantage Studios and son of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, with a few exceptions. Derennes assured teams that the franchise’s advancement remains on track, stating, “Our roadmap for Assassin’s Creed is strong and, thanks to the creativity and collective talent of everyone involved, we are confident we can realize our bold ambitions for this iconic franchise.”
