The United States and Taiwan held official high-level talks in Washington for the first time since the inauguration of the Biden administration.

According to the Reuters news agency on the 10th (local time), Taiwanese representative Xiao Mei-chin, who serves as Taiwan’s actual ambassador to the United States, announced that he had met Sung Kim, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs.

“We had a good meeting with Daejeon Kim and his talented team on this day,” he tweeted. “The fact that we deal with a lot of mutual interests here represents a strong partnership between the US and Taiwan.”

“The United States is deepening its relationship with Taiwan, a leader in democracy and an important economic and security partner,” said Xiao.

He was invited to attend the inauguration of US President Joe Biden last month. This was regarded as a green light to sustain strong future relations between the US and Taiwan in China’s economy.

The Biden administration has made a move to reaffirm that China’s relationship with Taiwan is “solid” after recent strengthening of military activities near Taiwan.

China regularly expresses feelings of discomfort in the United States, identifying Taiwan as the most important and sensitive issue in relations with the United States.

During the Trump administration, China was also furious at the increased US-Taiwan contacts and increased US arms sales to Taiwan.
