A large and strong Typhoon No. 2 is slowly moving northward south of Okinawa. It is expected to approach the Miyakojima region tomorrow while maintaining a strong force, and approach the Okinawa main island region on the 2nd. In Okinawa, be very careful of storms and high waves. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will occur even in places away from the typhoon from tomorrow, and there will be heavy rain over a wide area.

Typhoon No. 2 approaches the Miyakojima region tomorrow with “strong” force

As of noon on the 31st today, a large and strong Typhoon No. 2 is slowly moving northward south of Okinawa.
It is expected to approach the Miyakojima region tomorrow while maintaining a strong force.

The wind is getting stronger around the Sakishima Islands where the typhoon is approaching.
The maximum instantaneous wind speed up to 2:30 pm was 27.7 meters (14:22) at Miyakojima, 26.7 meters (13:29) at New Ishigaki Airport, and 25.7 meters (14:18) at Miyako Airport. Occasionally, the rain intensifies, and the wind blows so hard that you can’t stand without holding on to something.

Later tonight, part of the Miyakojima region is expected to enter a storm zone with wind speeds of 25 meters or more, and a “violent wind” that may cause injuries from flying objects and overturn trucks is expected. Please refrain from going out unnecessarily, stay away from windows indoors, and be extremely vigilant against storms.

Typhoon No. 2 is expected to approach the main island of Okinawa on the 2nd, gradually changing its course to the east after approaching the Miyakojima region.
From tomorrow 1st to 2nd, the Sakishima Islands and the main island of Okinawa will be covered by active rain clouds of the typhoon itself, and there is a risk of “alarm-level heavy rain.” Heavy rain, storms, high waves, and storm surges require vigilance.

After approaching the Okinawa region, it will move from western Japan to the southern seas of eastern Japan while weakening. The forecast circle is still large and the course is not yet determined, so we need to pay attention to future information.

Tomorrow 1st and 2nd Beware of heavy rain even in places away from the typhoon

The seasonal rain front, which has temporarily moved south today on the 31st, will gradually move northward from the 1st tomorrow, and will stagnate near Honshu.
From the 1st to the 2nd of tomorrow, the wet air around Typhoon No. 2 is expected to flow in, and rain clouds are expected to develop near the front, making the pattern likely to bring heavy rain.

In the afternoon of the 1st tomorrow, the rain will gradually intensify from western Japan from Kyushu to Kinki, and at night there will be thunder and heavy rain.
From the night of the 1st to the 2nd tomorrow, the area of rain will spread further, and it will rain widely in the Tokai, Kanto, Hokuriku, and Tohoku areas, and there is a risk of heavy rain not only on the Pacific Ocean side but also on the Sea of Japan side. No matter where you are, there is a risk of heavy rain, so be vigilant.

Also, the closer Typhoon No. 2 moves to the Pacific coast, the more rain there is likely to be.
From tomorrow onwards, please pay attention not only to localized heavy rain, but also to severe weather such as gusts of lightning and tornadoes.
For outdoor activities, it seems better to take measures such as considering changing the schedule.

A sign of heavy rain A sign of a sudden change in weather

There are three major phenomena that can be precursors to heavy rain.

① “A black cloud is approaching”
Developed cumulonimbus clouds that bring guerrilla downpours (locally heavy rains) appear pitch black. Black clouds that appear to be moving at high speed, or the sky suddenly turning dark despite the clear sky are also signs of heavy rain (locally heavy rain).

② “I heard the sound of thunder.”
When you hear a rumbling sound, a thundercloud is approaching. Also, seeing lightning is one of the signs of guerrilla downpours (localized downpours).

③ A cold wind suddenly blew.
From the developed cumulonimbus clouds, cold wind blows down with raindrops. You also need to pay attention to changes in the wind.

If you feel any of these signs, evacuate to a safe place immediately. Also, when a thunder warning is issued or when the weather forecast says “unstable atmospheric conditions” or “sudden change in the weather”, there is a possibility of torrential downpours (locally heavy rain).
