NEW YORK – Two New York City police officers were shot while helping an alleged victim of domestic violence at her home in Queens, police said. Both are expected to recover from their injuries.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said a 41-year-old woman arrived in District 105 Monday night to report an incident of domestic violence. He also confirmed multiple previous domestic violence calls from the same address.

The woman returned to the Springfield Gardens home Tuesday afternoon with the two officers. Minutes later, the suspect, identified by Shea as Rondell Goppy, arrived and began shooting. It’s unclear if he was waiting for the woman somewhere nearby or if he just came back at the time, Shea said.

After Goppy fired several rounds, the police returned fire and killed him.

One of the officers was shot in the hand and the other in the leg; Both suffered serious injuries and required surgery, but officers were also conscious and alert after the incident.

“They have serious injuries, but in the end they will be fine,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference in front of Jamaica Hospital.

“Here we have a situation where a woman was in danger and these officers went to protect her,” the mayor said. “Today they saved that woman’s life … because those officers were there, that woman is alive.”

Goppy, 41, worked as a law enforcement officer at the City University of New York and had a license to keep guns at home.

In a statement, CUNY said: “The City College of New York community learned today that Specialist Rondell Goppy, a City College public safety officer, lost his life in the course of an apparent incident of domestic violence in his home in Queens. The City College community extends its condolences to Officer Goppy’s family. “

Shea said part of the investigation would include the reason why the suspect still had the guns given the history of domestic violence allegations. A senior official told News 4 New York that he had received four previous calls about domestic incidents to the home.

The images from the Telemundo 47 helicopter showed a strong police response on a street.
