The flu epidemic continues in Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy.

2 deaths in Guadeloupe

Since the start of the epidemic 2,850 cases have been estimated in general practice and 59 emergency visits have been recorded, three of which were followed by hospitalization. The influenza virus, mostly type A, has been isolated in hospitals and in the city. Since the beginning of November, five serious cases, all of influenza A, have been reported, two of which have died.
Of the 35 emergency room visits recorded since early February, only one was followed by hospitalization.

Decrease in cases in Saint-Martin and increase in Saint-Barth

In Saint Martin, since the start of the epidemic, 990 cases suggestive of influenza have been identified and two emergency visits recorded. One serious case has been reported. However, there has been a decrease in the number of consultations, as well as in the emergency department of Flemming Hospital where the number of consultations is low.
In Saint-Barthélemy, since the start of the epidemic in late December, 372 influenza-like illnesses have been reported in the city and 27 visits to the emergency room, including follow-up to hospitalization.
Whether in city medicine or in the emergency room, the number of consultations has increased sharply in the last three weeks.
Type A and B viruses were first isolated from hospital samples.

Vaccination coverage still too low with us

Vaccination coverage for people at risk, which includes people aged 65 and over and people of all ages with certain chronic pathologies, is estimated by Public Health France from data on reimbursement of influenza vaccines, from the set of health insurance schemes.
In Guadeloupe, the analysis of the data as of 12/31/2019 shows a very slight increase in comparison with the estimates made the previous year. Vaccination coverage thus increased from 18.1% to 19.7% (+1.6 points). Compared to other regions, coverage remains low. Vaccination coverage data for Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy are not available.
Vaccination coverage throughout France was 46.8% as of December 31, 2019 (vs 46.1% as of 31/12/2018).
