Two people die in a house fire in Centro Habana

Two people died and three were injured early this Saturday during the fire in a house located on one of the corners of San José and Espada streets, in Central Havana.

The Fire Department of the Cuban capital assured that it was a “small fire”, but the videos shared on social networks They show the two-story building completely on fire, with the fire coming out of the doors and windows.

The incident began at 4:53 in the morning and was controlled hours later. Around 10:00 in the morning, this newspaper verified that the firefighters were still working in the area, under heavy police surveillance. The street, for its part, was isolated by the security forces.

So far, the authorities have not revealed the identity of the victims. A neighbor assured this newspaper that the owner of the property lives outside of Cuba and that he rented the house. The two deceased – who some identify as a couple in their 40s – helped to evacuate an older adult and two minors when the fire began to spread, but they re-entered the place and were no longer able to escape the flames.

The causes of the accident are not known either, although several residents hypothesize that a tenant loaded a motorcycle, whose explosion caused the fire. So far, the official press has not offered any report on the situation either.

“Maybe they went in to rescue something, to get something out so it wouldn’t burn. The older person was saved, they got her out, the ones who died,” said a resident of the area, to which some began to arrive. relatives of the victims.

In a brief message, the Fire Department explained that troops worked to extinguish the fire whose “good deed” managed to rescue two people, who were taken to the hospital.
