Two more charges against impeached President Myanmar | NOW

Two more charges have been filed against Myanmar’s military president Win Myint. He was arrested by the military junta along with the democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in early February.

The new charges were made public by his lawyer on Wednesday (photo). The 69-year-old former president is said to have “violated the constitution”, putting him in prison for three years.

Win Myint had already been charged with corona violations. It is not yet known when he will be brought to trial.

The Myanmar military staged a coup on Feb. 1 following the latest elections, with pro-democracy Aung San Suu Kyi and her party emerging as the largest. According to the army, fraud has taken place in those elections.

No evidence of fraud

The military-appointed foreign minister on Wednesday maintained with the organization of Southeast Asian countries ASEAN that there were “irregularities” in the elections in November last year. However, international observers and the National Election Commission have seen no evidence of this.

Meanwhile, the protests in Myanmar continue, but the military is getting harder. Tuesday came at least two people are killed at demonstrations. On Monday, eighteen were killed in clashes between protesters and police. According to the United Nations (UN), it was the deadliest day since the mass protests started.
