BERLIN – Two federal ministers of the German government have different views on whether Germany is at war with Russia.

The dissent, which sparked a spat on social media, became clear after German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said Berlin was a country at war with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Saturday (10/1/2022), Lauterbach took to Twitter, asking, “Seriously: What the hell is to kneel before Putin now?”

“We are at war with Putin and not with his psychotherapist,” he continued.

He insisted that Germany’s goal should be to ensure Ukraine’s victory on the battlefield.

According to Lauterbach, “whether Putin’s soul can handle it is irrelevant.”

The tweet came in response to a suggestion previously expressed by philosopher David Precht, who said that every NATO member state should provide Russia with assurances that Ukraine will not join a military alliance.

Precht suggested that this would open the door to peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.
