Two dead gulls were found in Montmartin-sur-Mer (Manche), near Coutances. Analyzes showed, Saturday June 11, 2022, that the two birds were carriers of the avian influenza virus (not to be confused with avian influenza, the name given to the disease caused in humans by this virus).
A “highly pathogenic” virus
Other tests are in progress to check if the strain is as pathogenic as the one noted in the bay of Saint-Brieuc at the start of the year, or in May, in the Somme, Pas-de-Calais and Seine Maritime.
“The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, which circulates in Europe, is particularly contagious and pathogenic for birds”, specifies the prefecture of La Manche, which has decided on reinforced surveillance.

A temporary control zone has been set up for a minimum of 21 days. It includes the municipalities of Agon-Coutainville, Annoville, Hauteville-sur-Mer, Heugueville-sur-Sienne, Hérenguerville, Montmartin-sur-Mer, Orval-sur-Sienne, Quettreville-sur-Sienne, Regnéville-sur-Mer, and Tourville-sur-Sienne. In particular, it involves placing all the poultry in the shelter of a building or a net. Sale at the farm is prohibited. It is also asked to avoid any contact with a wild bird.
