In the night between Friday and Saturday there was a one-sided traffic accident on the de Weper (N919) near Oosterwolde. As a result, two people died. The driver of the car was injured.
Police, firefighters, an ambulance and a trauma helicopter were called to the incident shortly after noon. The car went off the road and crashed into a tree.
Two occupants of the car, a 27-year-old man from the municipality of Steenwijkerland and a 26-year-old man from Veendam, died at the scene of their injuries. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Oosterwolde, was injured and taken to hospital.
The road has been closed to traffic for some time. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
