The Sinovac vaccine is injected twice, just like other Covid-19 vaccines in the world.

President Joko Widodo plans to be the first person in the country to be injected with the Sinovac vaccine. The vaccine will be injected twice or people will receive it in two doses.

Immunology expert, Iris Rengganis, said the vaccine must be given twice at a dose of 0.5 cc at a time. According to him, vaccines cannot be injected at once because everything has been measured.

“Then within two weeks of being vaccinated for the first time, people who have been vaccinated still have to apply the 3M and 3T health protocols,” he said at the BPOM’s Covid-19 EUA virtual conference, Monday (11/1). 3M discipline, namely wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining distance and the willingness to do the 3T, namely tracing, testing, treatment is still absolute even though it has been vaporized.

He cautioned that people who think they have got the first vaccine think safe and ignore 3M. In fact, he continued, a person’s antibodies will only be fully formed after receiving two injections.

“Even when they have been injected twice (they can still be infected) because the vaccine does not provide 100 percent immunity. However, the condition is not severe (because it has been vaccinated),” he said.

Iris explained, if the vaccine recipient then contracted Covid-19 then the cause was not because of the vaccine content. Iris explained that the Sinovac vaccine is made using an inactivated virus or an inactive virus. This means that this vaccine is safe because the virus cannot reproduce anymore.

“Do not let there be miscommunication after getting the vaccine and then getting sick, that’s what we have to straighten out,” he said.

The Sinovac vaccine is not the only one the Covid-19 vaccine given in two injections. If vaksin Sinovac given in a span of two weeks, then other vaccines have different doses of both.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, for example, gives the second dose of vaccine 21 days after the first. The two-dose vaccine is given for effective results.

The vaccine developed by the American company Moderna also has two doses. The time span between the first and second vaccine injections was 28 days.

These two vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna, use the same technology, namely mRNA. Through this technology the vaccine works by teaching the body to make proteins that trigger an immune response without using the virus that causes Covid-19. After the body’s immunity is formed, the body will create antibodies that can fight infection when the virus enters the body at a later date.

Then there is another American-produced vaccine, Novavax. This vaccine is still undergoing clinical trials in America and several other countries. Novavax is one of the vaccines that has been included in the Indonesian government’s order list. The hope is that early this year the results of the Novavax clinical trial will come out.

Novavax will also be injected twice. The length of time for the second injection was three weeks after the first. So far the Novavax or NVX-CoV2373 vaccine candidate works differently from some vaccines that have been injected because it is a protein subunit vaccine.

Then there is the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine which works on the virus’s genetic instructions to form protein spikes. The AstraZaneca vaccine uses double-stranded DNA, in contrast to Pfizer and Moderna which use single-stranded RNA.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is injected twice, with a span of four weeks. This vaccine has an efficacy of 62-90 percent depending on the dose given.
