Two Corruption Ministers in the Middle of a Pandemic, Death Penalty Waiting?

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaCorruption Eradication Commission (KPK) can ensnare corruptors with a death sentence during the corona virus pandemic (Covid-19). There is no mercy for corruptors who commit corruption in a crisis situation.

Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission, Nawawi Pomolango, said that the KPK hopes that there will be no more corrupt behavior that occurs in difficult times like this when citizens and the country are experiencing disasters.

“It is true that the KPK is in a situation like this, a condition in which the country is facing a Covid-19 outbreak like this, of course it really hopes that there will be no corrupt behavior that occurs in such difficult conditions,” Nawawi said as quoted Sunday (6/12/2020).

“That the threat of the death penalty can be applied to those who commit corruption in times of national disasters, social disasters and so on.”

Nawawi said his party would consider the demands for the death penalty. Nawawi said that the Corona pandemic could be used as an excuse to increase punishment for corruption offenders.

“Of course we will pay attention to the matter of this demand, it is used as an excuse for this condition. We can use it as an excuse to exacerbate the demands we submit,” he said.

Nawawi said that corruption, especially in the midst of this difficult situation, cannot be justified. For this reason, he said he would consider prosecuting the perpetrators of corruption with maximum demands.

“Every criminal act of corruption that takes place in the midst of a difficult situation in the country like this is a reason for the commission to make the prosecution a maximum, at least against those who are suspected of perpetrators of corruption,” he said.

KPK chairman Firli Bahuri once reminded all parties not to commit corruption in the midst of the Corona virus outbreak. He said that perpetrators of corruption during a disaster can be threatened with the death penalty.

“Especially at this time, we are facing the Corona outbreak. Really, there are people who are still doing corruption because they do not have empathy for the Republic of Indonesia. Remember that corruption during a disaster carries a death penalty,” said Firli at that time.

Firli emphasized that the efforts to eradicate corruption by the KPK will not stop even though they have to face the risk of the Corona virus. He said investigators to KPK investigators were still working until now.
