Duke Basketball Faces Stiff ACC Transfer Competition
Blue Devils Stand Alone with No Portal Losses, But Rivals Bolster Rosters
As college basketball teams reshape their lineups through the transfer portal, ESPN’s rankings reveal a competitive landscape for the Duke Blue Devils. Unlike many programs, Duke didn’t lose any scholarship players to the portal this offseason, but will face strengthened opposition in ACC play.
Louisville and NC State Lead the ACC Charge
Jeff Borzello of ESPN ranks Louisville’s transfer class, featuring Ryan Conwell, Adrian Wooley, and Isaac McKneely, at No. 4 nationally. Borzello anticipates at least two of these newcomers will be key contributors in the Cardinal backcourt. Meanwhile, NC State, now led by Will Wade, secured the No. 13 spot with eight transfer additions, including highly-regarded forward Darrion Williams.
Duke will have a home-and-away series against Louisville next season, presenting immediate challenges. The Blue Devils will only meet NC State once during the regular season, with the game scheduled for the Wolfpack’s Lenovo Center.
The increasing reliance on the transfer portal has dramatically altered the college basketball landscape. According to the NCAA, over 3,500 men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal during the 2023-24 season, a 15% increase from the previous year (NCAA.com).
Recent Duke Addition Adds to Optimism
Despite not needing to fill roster gaps through the portal, the Duke basketball program recently added Preston Greene, described as a ‘transformational addition’ for the team (SI.com). This high-profile recruit complements a core group that returns intact.
Jon Scheyer’s fourth Duke squad is preparing for a demanding ACC schedule. The team’s ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial as they aim for continued success.
