“Moroccan migration in Granada” o “MENA without parents, I want to live better”. This is how two Twitter troll accounts that pose as migrants living in Spain are defined in his biography. At the same time, they share content stating that they have thrown away food donated by NGOs, refused a room offered by a Christian organization or spread messages to encourage confrontation between Christians and Muslims. Both accounts, created in December, claim to be from Podemos among messages directed against immigration. But they are not the only profiles identified, also other accounts that make believe that they are promigration, spread messages on their account fueling the controversy.

A troll claiming to be a Moroccan immigrant woman throwing food

With a profile picture of a veiled woman, the account that is changing its name, from MashouSalma to Salma_mashou, pretends to be a Moroccan woman who has migrated to Granada. One of the messages published by this profile, which she describes as a “feminist in favor of Islam and Podemos”, accompanies a photograph Showing food piled on top of a garbage can along with the message: “Food crap given to me for the holidays by the local food delivery platform. Cookies so dry I couldn’t even swallow them, milk so sour it looked like urine, rice so hard it looked like plastic, and the rest was pure garbage. In the end I threw it all away” (sic).

However, it is false that it is a recent image taken by the person behind the profile, since it is a photo that has been spreading since at least October 2018, when it was already shared stating that it was food thrown away by Muslim people. . In addition, this photograph does not show what the text says: you cannot see the place where it was taken, nor the date, nor do you see Muslims throwing food into the garbage container. What’s more, no one is seen nearby (except for someone driving in a white van).

But it is not the only publication in which this profile uses a decontextualized and old photograph as if it were recent and its own. In another later post, this account spreads an image in which a boy is seen squatting with a machete along with the message: “This is the photo of my nephew crying when I arrived in Granada from Tangier having to cross the sea and the desert to get to here for help. Now with parties like VOX on the prowl, they seek to throw us back into the sea and kick us out. His Islamophobia has no limits ”(sic).

However, as can be seen through a reverse search, this image has been spreading on Moroccan websites or Facebook pages since at least 2017. in contents that relate her to the Tcharmil band. In addition, it is not the first image in which young people with machetes from this Moroccan gang are seen, which spreads by posing as migrants in Spain.

The profile that pretends to be an unaccompanied Moroccan minor

“Today nuns have offered me a free room to sleep while I fix papers. This is the hovel in which they wanted to lock me up. A hole-in-the-wall. Christians are unfaithful and unsupportive. I denounced them and took money from them to go to a five-star hotel. Enough of racism!!!”(sic). with this messagealong with a photograph of a room supposedly taken by him, the account that is made call MohaLahman, who defines herself as “MENA without parents”, tries to make believe that she is complaining about the help offered by a Christian organization. However, it is a photograph taken from an image bank and does not reflect any accommodation offered to unaccompanied foreign minors in Spain.

It is not the only content published by this account, also created in December 2022, that seeks the controversy over migrants. In other publications, such as a tweet from January 9, he says that “Christians should not exist” (sic). Days later, in another tweet, he affirms that he is “every day more disgusted to live in Spain” and adds: “Oh, what to throw out to Spaniards and make this the first Islamic country in Europe!!” (sic).

Among the content published by this account, there are not only own messages, but also share tweets from other troll accounts, a very repeated practice by these profiles to give each other visibility. Among the messages shared by this user who pretends to be a Moroccan minor in Spain, is the tweet published by the ‘Salma_mashou’ account that states that he has thrown away food donated by an NGO.

Among the troll accounts created to create controversy about migration and about Islam, there are not only profiles that pose as migrants, but also others like the one that calls itself abela martinez. This account, which defines itself in its profile as “+18 free thinker” and claims to be a PSOE voter, published, among other things, a tweet in which it said: “It seems disrespectful to celebrate Christmas with the number of Muslim children who They live in Spain. Has anyone stopped to think about how they feel?” (sic). It is not the only content that has been published from the account, which uses someone else’s photo, to refer to the Moroccan population in Spain. In another tweet, she posted: “Do you still insist on celebrating Christmas? There will be time to celebrate Ramadan. Eid Mubarak (sic)”.
