Twitter to discontinue free legacy blue check for social network verification starting April 1st

Twitter has announced that it will remove the blue checks from many accounts. The platform ensures that its old verification program, which did not charge a subscription, will be closed. That is, only accounts that pay for Twitter Blue will be able to verify their profiles.

On April 1st, we will begin to shut down our legacy verification program and we’ll remove the legacy checkmarks”, points out the Verified Twitter account. So far, these blue checks have the legend “This verified account is old. May or may not be relevant”.

The announcement of the closure of this program goes hand in hand with the global launch of Twitter Blue. In this way, only those who pay the monthly subscription will be able to verify their accounts, in addition to taking advantage of the tools provided by the plan.

The decision goes hand in hand with what Elon Musk had pointed out when he promoted the creation of Blue. The tycoon had indicated that his goal was that everyone who wanted a blue check on their profile would have to pay for it.. The reason was to reduce ‘spam bot’ accounts within the social network, in addition to monetizing with it.

Musk had even announced months ago that these legacy verifications would be removed with the arrival of Twitter Blue. “In a few months, we will remove all old blue checks. The way they were delivered was corrupt and meaningless”, said the tycoon in December 2022.

The legacy check removal date is also ‘April Fool’s Day’ in several countries around the world, including the United States. It would not be strange if Musk chose that day for that reason, since it is not news that Twitter was going to remove these blue checks.
