MEXICO CITY (apro). – The social network Twitter announced that it eliminated a network of 276 inauthentic accounts that shared civic content in support of government initiatives related to public health and political parties in Mexico.
In 2018, Twitter for the first time published a public archive of data related to state-backed intelligence operations, it said in a statement.
“Since that first report in October 2018, we have shared 37 data sets of platform manipulation campaigns attributed to States that have originated in 17 countries, covering more than 200 million Tweets and nine terabytes of multimedia content,” he said. .
Today, 3,465 additional accounts were made public to their file of information operations linked to States, the only one of its kind in the industry, which includes 8 different operations in 6 countries: Mexico, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Russia , Tanzania, Uganda and Venezuela, respectively.
“Every account and content associated with these operations has been permanently removed from the service. In addition, we have shared relevant data from this disclosure with three leading research partners: Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), Fake News Hunters, and the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO), ”he added.
He highlighted that, in most cases, the accounts were suspended for violations of his policy regarding spam and manipulation of the platform.
The other countries
— In the People’s Republic of China eliminated a network of 3,48 accounts that amplified the Chinese Communist Party’s narratives related to the treatment of the Uyghur population in Xinjiang, as well as 112 accounts connected to “Changyu Culture,” a private company backed by the Xinjiang regional government.
— On Russia, they removed a network of 16 accounts linked to the IRA, the Russian internet agency, which was attempting an information operation in the Central African Republic to combine real and fake accounts and introduce a pro-Russia point of view in Central Africa.
In addition, they removed a network of 50 accounts that targeted the Libyan civilian government and supporting actors, while expressing significant support for Russia’s geopolitical position in Libya and Syria.
— On Tanzania They removed a network of 268 accounts used to submit bad faith reports on Twitter, targeting members and supporters of FichuaTanzania and its founder, and a subset of accounts also tweeted pro-government content primarily associated with # chaguamagufuli2020.
— On Uganda They pulled out a network of 418 accounts participating in an inauthentic and coordinated activity in support of Ugandan President Museveni and his party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
— On Venezuela they eliminated a network of 277 Venezuelan accounts that amplified accounts, hashtags and topics in support of the government and its official narratives. Many of the people behind this abuse had authorized an application, “Twitter Patria”, to access their accounts and timelines and, therefore, they suspended it.
Network users criticized this platform because it reprimands and censors, for ideological reasons, accounts in various countries at the convenience of the interests of the United States.
