Twitch Prime devient Prime Gaming

It is via the twitter account from journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau that we learned the news last night: Amazon will change its Twitch Prime program put in place a little over four years ago.

No big revolution in the program except the name change: Twitch Prime becomes Prime Gaming. Amazon thus wishes to make its Amazon Prime offer more homogeneous with the services already in place such as Prime Video or Prime Music.

The benefits offered to subscribers do not change, so they will have the opportunity each month to subscribe to their favorite Twitch channel for free while continuing to receive free games and many freebies like exclusive skins, new content and other surprises. . The 150 million Prime members around the world will therefore not be in uncharted waters despite this change of identity.

The moment chosen to make this announcement is perhaps not trivial for the American giant. Hit hard by the #MeToo movement accusing it of not actively controlling the content of its members as well as the exclusion of one of its biggest streamers, Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm, Twitch will, thanks to this revival, make it possible to draw attention to another subject and thus attempt to restore its somewhat tarnished image in recent weeks.

Prior to this novelty, Twitch had already started its expansion by offering a category dedicated to esport but also by promoting its categories outside video games such as Discussion, Sports, Art, Music and Performances, … It is therefore clear that the benchmark of streaming platforms intends to go beyond the sole context of gaming by offering other things and therefore reaching a wider audience.

It remains to be seen now how Amazon will focus its strategy towards Twitch in the medium and long term in order to respond to increasingly fierce competition from YouTube, Facebook and Chinese giant Tencent.
